Vivre Ensemble course guide
The Vivre Ensemble certificate is required when applying for Luxembourgish citizenship through naturalisation and for certain nationality-by-option routes. The official course is the guided route: complete the required attendance and there is no separate exam to take.
How the 24 hours are organised
The course has 24 contact hours, arranged as 12 two-hour sessions.

The three modules
The sessions are divided between the topics below, so you can see where the time goes.
- •Fundamental rights — 3 sessions of 2 hours (6 hours).
- •State and municipal institutions — 6 sessions of 2 hours (12 hours).
- •Luxembourg history and European integration — 3 sessions of 2 hours (6 hours).
In person, online, and weekend sessions
Course listings, languages, and places vary. Check the official listing for the options currently offered.
You can take the course in person, and some sessions are offered online or at weekends. At our October 2026 review, current listings included Hollerich, Esch-Belval, Diekirch, Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette and Wiltz. Language, venue and timetable vary by listing.
Weekend sessions can be useful when weekday attendance is difficult, but they are only available in some listings.
English online courses are live classes, not recordings you complete whenever you like. The instructor normally sends the material and joining link beforehand. You review the material, attend the full two-hour session, participate with your camera and microphone enabled, and manage your own connection and equipment.
Availability tip from candidates
Some candidates report that online sessions are popular and can fill quickly. Availability changes, so check the linked current listing and keep classroom or weekend options in mind if your preferred dates are unavailable.
Attendance is the assessment
The course route is completed through attendance at the required sessions, rather than a separate final exam.
Important from 1 January 2027
From 1 January 2027, missing any session—even with an excuse—means retaking the entire affected module. Every session in a module must be completed with the same instructor. If you miss one, you may need to wait until one instructor has space across all of that module's sessions, which can delay your certificate.
How long should you allow?
The teaching itself is 24 hours, but fitting 12 sessions around the available dates can take several weeks or months. Plan for the published schedule rather than assuming every course follows the same timetable.
Possible Module 3 exemption
Eligible participants in CAI/Biergerpakt may be exempt from Module 3. Check the current official rules before relying on an exemption.
